Transportation
A crucial step in the journey crude oil takes from the ground to our automobiles is the transporting of it from oilfield to refinery. Every day, approximately 80 million barrels of oil must be transported from
oilfields around
the world
, often across international borders. Much of the world’s crude oil begins its journey in
pipelines
. With roughly 200,000 miles of pipelines, the United States has the largest pipeline system in the world. In addition to pipelines, a global fleet of
oil tankers
, now numbering around 3,500 moves oil from the source to refineries. Trains and
barges
are also used to transport crude.
